Markup Calculator: Formula, Example and What the Result Means
Works out a selling price from cost and markup percentage. This guide walks through what each input means, the formula behind the answer and a worked example using typical Australian figures. You can follow along in the free Markup Calculator.
Why it matters
Australian businesses deal with GST at 10%, BAS reporting, PAYG withholding for staff, super guarantee obligations and company or individual tax depending on structure. Getting pricing and margins right is the difference between busy and profitable.
What you need to enter
The calculator asks for 2 inputs. The table shows each one with the example value used later in this guide.
| Input | Example value |
|---|---|
| Cost ($) | 60 |
| Markup (%) | 50 |
The formula
Price = cost × (1 + markup ÷ 100).
Worked example
Entering the example values above gives these results:
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Selling price (excl. GST) | $90.00 |
| Selling price incl. GST | $99.00 |
| Resulting margin | 33.33% |
The headline figure is $90.00 (selling price (excl. GST)). Change any input in the calculator and every result updates instantly, so you can test different scenarios side by side.
How the selling price (excl. GST) changes with cost
The table below keeps every other input at the example value and moves only “Cost ($)” up and down by 10% and 20%. It shows how sensitive the selling price (excl. GST) is to that one figure.
| Cost ($) | Selling price (excl. GST) |
|---|---|
| 48 | $72.00 |
| 54 | $81.00 |
| 60 | $90.00 |
| 66 | $99.00 |
| 72 | $108.00 |
At 48 the result is $72.00; at 72 it is $108.00. If a small change in this input moves the answer a lot, it is worth double-checking that figure before you rely on the result.
A practical tip
A 50% markup gives only a 33% margin. Don’t mix the two when setting prices.
