Using a Net Worth Calculator in Australia: A Step-by-Step Guide

Updated 11 May 2026 · Savings and investing

Adds up assets and debts to calculate your net worth. This guide walks through what each input means, the formula behind the answer and a worked example using typical Australian figures. You can follow along in the free Net Worth Calculator.

Why it matters

Australians save and invest through bank accounts, term deposits, shares, ETFs and property. Interest and dividends are taxable, franking credits can offset tax on dividends, and inflation steadily reduces the value of money that isn’t growing.

What you need to enter

The calculator asks for 6 inputs. The table shows each one with the example value used later in this guide.

InputExample value
Property value ($)800000
Superannuation ($)150000
Savings and investments ($)40000
Other assets ($)25000
Mortgage ($)450000
Other debts ($)15000

The formula

Net worth = total assets − total liabilities.

Worked example

Entering the example values above gives these results:

ResultValue
Net worth$550,000.00
Total assets$1,015,000.00
Total liabilities$465,000.00

The headline figure is $550,000.00 (net worth). Change any input in the calculator and every result updates instantly, so you can test different scenarios side by side.

How the net worth changes with property value

The table below keeps every other input at the example value and moves only “Property value ($)” up and down by 10% and 20%. It shows how sensitive the net worth is to that one figure.

Property value ($)Net worth
640,000$390,000.00
720,000$470,000.00
800,000$550,000.00
880,000$630,000.00
960,000$710,000.00

At 640,000 the result is $390,000.00; at 960,000 it is $710,000.00. If a small change in this input moves the answer a lot, it is worth double-checking that figure before you rely on the result.

A practical tip

Track net worth every six or twelve months. The trend matters more than the number.
