Getting the Most From a Income Tax Calculator: Tips and Common Errors

Updated 10 June 2026 · Tax and pay

A Income Tax Calculator gives a fast answer, but the answer is only as good as what goes in. These are the mistakes we see most often with income tax calculations in Australia, and how to avoid them.

1. Confusing marginal and average tax rates

Moving into a higher bracket only raises the tax on the dollars above that threshold. Your average rate is always lower than your marginal rate.

2. Forgetting the Medicare levy

Most take-home pay estimates that leave out the 2% levy overstate pay by hundreds or thousands of dollars.

3. Using last year’s tax rates

Brackets and offsets change. The Stage 3 changes from 1 July 2024 and further cuts from 1 July 2026 mean older figures can be well off.

4. Treating a deduction as a refund

A $1,000 deduction reduces taxable income by $1,000. The cash benefit is only your marginal rate on that amount.

5. Overlooking the detail that matters most here

Your employer withholds tax through the year, so compare this estimate with the PAYG withheld on your income statement to see whether a refund or a bill is likely.

How the total tax and Medicare changes with annual taxable income

A common mistake is getting one input slightly wrong. Here is what happens to the total tax and Medicare when “Annual taxable income ($)” is off by up to 20% in either direction, with everything else held steady.

Annual taxable income ($)Total tax and Medicare
72,000$13,828.00
81,000$16,708.00
90,000$19,588.00
99,000$22,468.00
108,000$25,348.00

At 72,000 the result is $13,828.00; at 108,000 it is $25,348.00. If a small change in this input moves the answer a lot, it is worth double-checking that figure before you rely on the result.

A quick sense check

Tax is worked out bracket by bracket using the 2025–26 resident rates (0% to $18,200, 16% to $45,000, 30% to $135,000, 37% to $190,000 and 45% above). The low income tax offset is subtracted, then the 2% Medicare levy is added. With typical inputs the calculator returns total tax and Medicare of $19,588.00. If your own result looks wildly different, check that each figure is in the right unit and period (weekly, monthly or yearly) before drawing conclusions.
